[edit] Information

Having been denied an Oscar for The Sorrow and the Pity, Marcel Ophuls finally received his due reward for this damning study of the unholy alliance of political expediency and anti-Semitic corruption that allowed former Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie (the so-called "Butcher of Lyons") to spend over 30 contented years in Bolivia, in spite of the enormity of his crimes against humanity. In the course of interviews with victims, enemies, collaborators and others, it becomes clear that Barbie had many willing accomplices - and only some wore Nazi uniforms. An epic historical documentary, perhaps, but also a moral indictment of timeless resonance (Radio Times review). French and German soundtrack with fixed English subtitles for non-English dialogue only.
