Vermeer and Rembrandt are the twin pillars of the Golden Age of Dutch painting, yet Vermeer's works were neglected during his lifetime. This, the first program to profile Jan Vermeer, investigates the life and art of this elusive figure. Jan Vermeer was living very privately in the dutch city of Delft. Some of his most famous paintings are "The milkmaid", "View on Delft", "The guitar player" and "The girl with the perl" are icons and classical examples of his excellent handling of light. Michael Gill is on his tracks, telling about the scientist Vermeer, who experimented with the Camera Obscura and the perspective, tells us about the cartography and the meanings, to piece together all informations about this silent citizen of Delft to a real genius.
