His girlfriend Michaela thinks he’s mad. It s the start of the summer and Jimmy is about to find out just what it takes to bring home the bacon. The first (2004) short-run season (four episodes) was followed up with a one-off special, Back on Jimmy's Farm, in 2005, and two further 4-part series, titled Return to Jimmy's Farm (2006) and Crisis on Jimmy's Farm (2007). 30-minute edits from the first season are currently being aired under the title Jimmy's Farm Diaries. A year in the life of Jimmy Doherty, an ambitious 28-year-old Essex boy who sets out to turn a deserted old dairy farm into a thriving business selling sausages and bacon direct to the public from his own butchery. Despite having no pig farming qualifications, Jimmy rears several rare breeds, including what he hopes will be his flagship brand, the almost extinct Essex pig

[edit] August 2003

Fellow farmer Peter Gott informs Jimmy that progress on the shop is far too slow, and it requires desperate measures to fill the sausage order for a Covent Garden farmers' market. To get an idea of how a profitable business is run, the newcomer extends his local contacts and tours a commercial pig farm

[edit] November 2003

The pressure mounts for Jimmy as he sets out to get his sausages and bacon ready for a major food show in Birmingham, and desperately needs to get his shop open for the Christmas period. Michaela provides a fillip by moving the last of her belongings into the farm, but Blaze the boar's sex life isn't improving and he seems confused by the sows. To make matters worse, one of the Essex pigs dies

[edit] January 2004

The farm is still not breaking even eight months after Jimmy Doherty began his new vocation, and to make matters worse, an artificial insemination expert is called in to find out why Blaze the boar is still not breeding properly. The only chance of survival is the farm shop and Jimmy hopes the grand opening will finally see his fortunes turn around
