About Pierre Verger
Pierre Edouard Leopold Verger, alias Fatumbi(Paris, November 4, 1902; Salvador, Brazil, February 11, 1996) was a photographer, self-taught ethnographer, and babalawo (Yoruba priest of Ifa) who devoted most of his life to the study of the African diaspora — the slave trade, the African-based religions of the new world, and the resulting cultural and economical flows from and to Africa.

Pierre Verger: Messenger Between Two Worlds
Pierre Verger: Mensageiro Entre Dois Mundos
This sumptuously-filmed documentary retraces the adventurous life of photographer Pierre Verger, a French ethnographer who devoted his life to the study of the reciprocal cultural influences between Bahia, Brazil and the Benin regions of Africa. The originality of his work lies in his demonstration that not only were cultural traditions brought from Africa to Brazil by slaves, but former slaves who returned to their native continent brought back Brazilian influences as well. The film is narrated by renowned musician Gilberto Gil and includes Verger's very last interview, one day before his death at 93.

Nomad Eyes
Olhares Nomades
A companion piece to Messenger Between Two Worlds, the film "Olhares Nomades" was initially conceived for the Exhibition "O Brasil de Pierre Verger" (Pierre Verger's Brazil). Based on about 800 photographs of Pierre Verger, it narrates some parts of his travel around Brazil, especially that of Bahia de Todos os Santos. The editing also attributes a different and dynamic format to the classic black & white of Verger's pictures. The soundtrack was composed exclusively for the exhibition by the veteran Bahian artist Bira Reis, also featuring Antulio Madureira.

With the exception of a brief opening passage in Portuguese (no subtitles) the film is simply photos set to music.
