The broadcaster embarks on a journey through the heart of America, following the course of its famous river, the Mississippi. He begins by exploring the legacy of slavery in the Deep South, and is invited to witness a jazz funeral, unique to New Orleans. He makes a poignant visit to rare surviving plantation slave-quarters and has an encounter with an alligator in America's largest swamp.

The second part of the broadcaster's journey begins in Clarksdale, Mississippi, where he meets Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman and discovers why he returned to his roots after 40 years away. In Memphis, Tennessee, the Rev Kyles shows the site where Martin Luther King was assassinated, and reveals that he was standing by King's side when he was shot. Trevor also meets 74-year-old Barbara Hearn, one of Elvis Presley's former girlfriends, who describes the singer at the beginning of his phenomenal rise to fame.

[edit] St Louis

The final leg of the broadcaster's journey sees him in St Louis, Missouri, on Independence Day, where he meets one of the country's richest baseball teams. On an island in the Mississippi he visits a weapons factory that has made guns for every conflict the US has ever fought in, before getting behind the wheel of a paddle steamer in Hannibal, the home town of Huckleberry Finn author Mark Twain. Trevor's next stop is Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he discovers business is booming at the enormous Mall of America, and a surprise awaits him as he reaches his ultimate destination - the source of the Mississippi River.
