[edit] Information

The red-crowned crane is considered an endangered species both in China and internationally. It is only found in the northeast Asia region. The Zhalong National Nature Reserve in Heilongjiang and Yancheng National Nature Reserve in Jiangsu are the bird's most important habitats in China. The Zhalong Reserve serves mainly mainly as their summer home and the Yancheng Reserve operates an artificial breeding programme. Cranes are regarded as symbols of longevity in China, and Zhalong is called the Hometown of Cranes. Covering an area of 21,000 hectares, the Zhalong Nature Reserve is a wetland with rich biological resources. It is home to 265 kinds of birds. About 300 out of 2,500 red-crowned cranes worldwide are found in Zhalong. Every spring as the snow in Zhalong begins to melt, red-crowned cranes return. They mate, build nests and breed offspring here. In early Oct. every year, wild red-crowned cranes go on their migration flights toward the south. They fly to the coastal areas in Yancheng City of Jiangsu or Taiwan to spend winter. Deforestation and agricultural expansion have played a significant role in the decline of the red-crowned crane's population. There are roughly 2,500 red-crowned cranes left in existence. The preservation of the wetland habitat in Asia is a major challenge, as it's one of the most heavily populated regions in the world. This 50 minute documentary looks at the lives of the endangered red-crowned cranes at two nature reserves in China, plus the difficulties the cranes face as they grow up, and the crisis facing the species.
