[edit] Information

The 6 x 1 hour episodes are narrated by Kenneth Branagh and the fact that the dusty old grainy black and white footage we are used to seeing is now in colour makes the grim facts all the more horrifying; over 10 million soldiers lost their lives during the first world war and it also marked the rise of new technology (the fighter plane, tanks etc) and chemical warfare (poison gas was used heavily for the first time).

The series follows the war chronologically and the episodes are titled Catastrophe, Slaughter in the Trenches, Blood in the Air, Killers of the Sea, Mayhem on the Eastern Front and Victory and Despair. With over 75% of the material having never been seen on television before this really is fascinating stuff, important too, in the troubled times we live in it’s vital not to forget what went before. Very recommended.

Extras: A whole extra episode focusing tactics and strategy and making much use of CGI, there are also 15 minutes of interviews with the production team and biographies of some of the major players.
