[edit] Information

Zero Hour dramatizes the hour leading up to some of the most memorable historical events as they unfold minute by minute. This dynamic original series dramatizes the final hour leading up to several pivotal historical events. Here we experience history just before it became history.Using a real-time clock and a split-screen to follow key players, the series reveals the chilling lead-up to events that changed the world including the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown, 9/11 and the Columbine shooting.

[edit] Disaster at Chernobyl

The explosion at Chernobyl was ten times worse than that at Hiroshima and was due to a combination of human error and imperfect technology. Using a real-time split-screen format reminiscent of the hit series, 24, this programme examines the 60 critical minutes leading up to the explosion at the power station on 26th April 1986.

Each minute unfolds narrating the events from the perspectives of key characters involved including Chernobyl's deputy chief engineer and his staff in the control room as well as innocent bystanders, the wife of one of Chernobyl's workers and two fishermen working in Chernobyl's warm waste waters.

With an extraordinary combination of drama and state of the art CGI graphics, Disaster at Chernobyl climaxes with the reconstructon of the final seconds leading to the disaster, the explosion itself and its terrifying aftermath.

[edit] Massacre at Columbine High

This is a captivating, minute-by-minute account of the Columbine High School massacre that horrified the world.

At 11.08 on Tuesday 20 April 1999, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, students in Littleton, Colorado, approached their school and just one hour later, they lay dead having taken their own lives after killing 12 fellow pupils, one teacher and seriously injuring 23 others.

Featuring chilling video footage of Klebold and Harris this programme offers a real insight into the twisted minds that devised a devastating plan too horrific to believe and then carried it out with cruel and fanatic precision.

Was this massacre a sign of sickness in today's society which could possibly reoccur, or was it an extraordinary and unlikely to be repeated combination of character, background and psychology that erupted with devastating consequences?

Beyond exploring the root of the incident, this programme also tells many stories of selfless bravery in the face of a terrifying situation.

[edit] Terror in Tokyo

On Monday 20th March 1995 during morning rush hour, a terrorist organisation attacked five crowded commuter trains in the heart of Tokyo with nerve gas. Using a real-time split-screen format, this programme reveals, minute by-minute, the horrific effects that nerve gas has on people who are completely unaware of what is happening to them. It explains how their central nervous systems were paralysed by this terrifying man-made agent and how they suffocated where they stood. This anonymous, indiscriminate and seemingly motiveless attempt at mass murder shocked the world.

As hundreds of revellers enjoyed a night out in a popular nightclub in Kuta Beach, Bali, members of a Malaysian Al Qaeda cell were preparing to unleash a devastating attack. Dual explosions ripped through the Sari Club, killing more than 200 innocent holidaymakers and maimed many more. The existence of a truly global terrorist network instantly became a terrifying reality.

[edit] The Capture of Saddam Hussein

Eight months after the fall of Baghdad, on 13th December 2003, U.S. Special Forces launched Operation Red Dawn just nine miles from Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, resulting in the infamous capture of the fugitive dictator.

This episode of the compelling Zero Hour series reconstructs the final hour of this raid based on the previously unknown testimony of Samir, an Iraqi Shia Muslim, who was acting as a translator for the US special-forces and who helped pull Saddam from his final hiding place.

It is a particularly personal and poignant viewpoint from a man driven from his country 12 years previously by Saddam’s regime, but who returned and extracted his revenge.

[edit] The King of Cocaine

To some, Pablo Escobar was the greatest criminal in history. A brutal man who terrorized, tortured and murdered thousands as the billionaire king of the Columbian cocaine racket. To others he was a Robin Hood - giving back to the poor, the money made from selling drugs to the spoiled and decadent rich.

Hot on Escobar's trail is a father and son team. They are leading an elite squad of Colombian police that have tracked the King of Cocaine for more than five years.

Based on the testimony of those who were there that day and transcripts of Escobar's telephone conversations, this programme offers an intense, second-by-second reconstruction of the Drug Lord's final hour - an hour that builds relentlessly to Escobar's bloody end in a storm of bullets.

[edit] The Sinking of the Estonia

On 27th September 1994, the car ferry Estonia departed from Tallinn with 989 people on board. She was bound for Stockholm but never arrived. Six hours into the stormy crossing, the 15,000-ton ship sent out a desperate Mayday communication. By interviewing passengers and crew and by analysing the official investigation into the accident, the evidence is pieced together to show how this tragedy took place and how, incredibly, 137 people managed to survive.

[edit] Columbia Space Shuttle Disaster

By 2003 NASA was under extreme pressure to launch the shuttle Columbia. A number of previous missions had been aborted due to technical problems, but it would proved to be a decision that precluded the biggest disaster in NASA'S history. As the world watched, the unthinkable happened. When the shuttle re-entered the earth's atmosphere, a small undetected hole in the wing, caused by a small piece of foam dislodged during the launch, caused the shuttle to disintegrate into a screaming fireball.

[edit] A Royal Massacre

In minute detail, this documentary reconstructs the circumstances leading up to the brutal massacre of ten members of the Nepalese Royal Family in June 2001 by the Crown Prince Dipendra.

Drawing on eyewitness accounts, ballistics reports and an exacting investigation into the murders, this programme lays the conspiracy theories to rest and explans the real motivation behind the killings.

It is a story of almost Shakespearean proportions - of love denied and violent retribution. The programme also shows the real Dipendra to have been a gun fetishist prone to violent bouts of drink and drug-induced rage.

[edit] SAS Mission Impossible

As six British soldiers sat imprisoned in a hut in the jungles of Sierra Leone, their captors - a heavily-armed militia group known as the West Side Boys - were mostly asleep. But unknown to either group, the SAS were about to engage in one of the boldest rescue missions in modern history. They were flown deep into the jungle of Sierra Leone in an attempt to release the hostages who had been held for more than two weeks.

What happened as the rescue attempt unfolded has always been a closely guarded secret. Now the story of this SAS mission and the terrible days of captivity endured by the hostages is told for the first time by the people who were there. For one of the hostages it is a story of survival in a living hell.
