Monarchy is more than the biographies of the kings and queens of England, it is an in-depth examination of what the English monarchy has meant in terms of the expression of the individual, the Mother of parliaments, Magna Carta, the laws of England and the land of England. In this series the eminent historian Dr David Starkey brings to life powerful individuals and colourful characters using his unique and engaging gift as a communicator.

David Starkey traces the emergence of an English identity from the collapse of Roman rule, through the German invasions, and onto the early Anglo-Saxon Kings, concluding with the first king of all England, Edgar.

David Starkey looks at the Viking invasions tha lead to the eventual assimilation of the newcomers.

The Norman conquest and the brutal reign of William the Conqueror precedes the birth of the age of chivalry concluding with the bitter struggle between Matilda and Stephen for the crown.

Covers the reigns of the charismatic Henry II and Richard the Lionheart, who spends most of his reign on crusades and John who makes enemies of nearly everyone and ends up having to agree to be a vassal of the Pope and signa the Magna Carta. Henry III becomes King at 9 years of age. When he was 25 he tried to break the control of the Barons but fails. His son, Edward, restores the Monarchy.

This episode is devoted to the reigns of the three Edwards (I, II & III) who expanded the English empire into Wales, Scotland and much of France and started the Hundred Years' War.

[edit] Death of a Dynasty

After the death of Edward III, whose heir the Black Prince is already dead, the rightful heir Richard is usurped by his cousin Henry Bollingbrook and the next 100 years sees 7 kings and many civil wars. All this upheaval results in the end of the Lancastrian kings after the War of the Roses.
