[edit] Germany

Germany is a land of monumental castles, great palaces and defensive constructions whose walls and legends are still intact today. Stories featured include the alleged madness of the Duke of Bavaria in Neuschwanstein, the escapes of Allied prisoners in Colditz, and the supposed death of the Archbishop Hatto by thousands of rats in the Mouse Tower. This episode takes us to the walls of Neuschwanstein, Heidelberg, Lichtenstein, Burghausen, Reichenstein, Drachenburg, Kriebstein, Colditz, Mauseturm and the so-called Frankenstein Castle. Filmed in 4K, the episode includes historical recreations that bring us closer to the people of the time, as well as 3D reconstructions, aerial images and contributions from historians and experts.

[edit] Spain

Spain has a variety of castles purposefully designed for the city and region in which they are located. The country is a mosaic of regions that are fiercely proud of their unique and individual history. Most of Spain's castles date back to medieval times, and have had many influences in both their architecture and their role within the local area. The Muslim presence in Spain over several centuries made many of its castles quite unique in many ways. Spanish monarchs took advantage of the architectural knowledge of the Arabs who settled on the peninsula to build impregnable defensive jewels. Since the Middle Ages, over 20,000 castles have been built, where palace intrigues, military crusades, love dramas and family successions became legend.

[edit] Portugal

Portugal is scattered with castles and forts from the very north of the country to the Algarve in the south. The region was fought over for long periods of its history, by Romans, Visigoths, Moors, Christians and then later by Spanish and French invaders. Castles were built throughout the ages to protect strategic towns and cities. Many of Portugal's castles are closely related to the Order of the Temple and to independence from the Muslim and Spanish kingdoms. The fortresses reveal an Arab influence dating back centuries combined with the Templar presence and Portuguese flair that made these constructions seemingly impregnable.
