[edit] Information

Sir Patrick Moore wonders if there is life beyond Earth, while Chris Lintott spends the night with the giant Keck Telescope and meets alien hunter Dr Jill Tarter from SETI at the Allen Telescope Array.

Chris explores 3 ways in which to detect planets, Doppler spectroscopy, Gravitational microlensing, and the Transit method.

This month four planets will be visible in the northern hemisphere, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury and Saturn, and Pete Lawrence tells us how to spot them.

In the news this month are the last signs of life from the Phoenix lander on Mars, as winter sets in and it has probably frozen dead. MESSENGER had a second flyby of Mercury, giving new insight on the surface.

In January look for a special program on the 400th anniversary of the telescope
