David traces Scotch whisky's rise from humble drink to global superpower, encompassing history, craft, identity, marketing, science and big business. He surveys the state of the multi-national Scotch whisky industry and the threats to its world dominance, meeting coopers and coppersmiths, whose craft it relies upon, before visiting Campbeltown to enrol on a distilling course.

David visits Islay to explore how the terrain and people contribute to its distinctive whisky, and learns how the drink's profile and sales would be lost without marketing - though image does not always meet with reality. Finally, at a fine whisky auction, the tale of Scotch's lucrative investment and collection sub-industry is told.

David travels to meet rivals to Scotch whisky's dominance, beginning in Norfolk, where he encounters the thriving English Whisky Company. He also visits Japan, Sweden and Tasmania, and reflects on the future and status of this totem of a drink.
