Krishnan Guru-Murthy heads to the Republic of Mali, a landlocked country in west Africa and the continent's eighth largest. There, he finds a troubled nation as ongoing fighting and the growing threat of Islamist extremism has severely impacted tourism. The disturbances are also threatening the upkeep of historic sites and cultural treasures of global significance.
