[edit] Information

Filmed in the heart of Beijing, in front of the gateway to the Forbidden City, the program was originally broadcast live on Chinese television, and as such is very professionally produced, with lots of fine camera work, including many aerial shots of the parade and the central city itself. The first disc covers the daytime parade, featuring military displays and floats highlighting successes and achievements over the previous 6 decades. An amazing number of people present, including the full panoply of official and governmental observers. The second part encompasses the evening/night parades and focuses more on the Chinese peoples themselves, celebrating the many different regions and ethnic groups. Everyone, from the officials, the crowds, and the participants seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, a happy infection that passes on to the viewer. The people of China are obviously proud of their country and its accomplishments, and the parade clearly reflects this. The celebrations conclude with a tremendous fireworks display, including a crossover to a similar event underway in Hong Kong. Part 3 is a very interesting overview of similar National Day Parades held over the previous 60 years. Especially so as it features rarely seen footage of the generations of Chinese political leadership observing the displays. Many of these political figures fell into disgrace over the decades, but there is no attempt to remove or disguise their significant roles during the various periods of their influence. The commentary, in English, also presents a relatively accurate presentation of the political "State Of The Nation" at the time of each parade, briefly explaining why some of the National Day parades were not held or cancelled.
