[edit] Information

Early last century, 19-year-old Dan Leahy and his brother Mick embarked on an epic journey. Together, the brothers left all they knew behind and set off for the then-Australian colony of Papua New Guinea. These two became the first white men to set foot in the highlands of the new colony.

The object of the Leahys' desire was New Guinea's wealth of gold. The mine that the brothers set up quickly became an epicentre for imperial activity. However, the increased European intrusion came at a cost. Like any story of colonial rule, the new era of modernity took its toll on the local people's way of life.

This installment of Dynasties tells the story of the Leahy family and their struggles to reconcile ideals with an increasingly volatile world.

The 1930s was no place for mixed loyalties. In a time of strict boundaries and enforced segregation, Dan Leahy chose to follow his heart. Dan not only mixed with the New Guinea native population, he openly adopted local customs.

Through family accounts and old photographs, the viewer is transported into another time. The story told is of an era that has passed and will never come again, which lends the documentary an appealing and romantic quality.
