[edit] Information

Griff Rhys Jones is on an epic journey from the tip to the toe of New Zealand but has set himself a challenge to avoid Highway One and journey the Kiwi roads less travelled.

[edit] Chapter 1: Cape Reinga Auckland

Griff begins his trip at the very northern point of New Zealand, Cape Reinga, and is welcomed by a Maori chief of the region and challenged to make himself at home.

[edit] Chapter 2: Auckland to Wellington

On the second leg of Griff's epic tour of New Zealand's back roads, he decides the best way to avoid highway one is to start by flying over it and heading straight to the Coromandel Peninsula. On the way, he spies Auckland's many extinct volcanos. Griff later heads out to the newest piece of land on the planet - the ever-expanding White Island volcano.

[edit] Chapter 3: Wellington to Lake Coleridge

Griff takes the ferry crossing from the North to the South islands, and heads to the old whaling station on Queen Charlotte Sound - which remarkably still operated until the 1970s. He meets an old sea captain who challenges him to attempt to understand the 'Number 8 Wire' mentality of the south - a 'can do' attitude where anything can be achieved if you put your mind to it.

[edit] Chapter 4: Lake Coleridge to Bluff

Griff hires a camper van and takes to the roads of the South Isle, as his journey heads towards a conclusion, and a gliding adventure and a jet boat ride are among his highlights. He is then taken by the Milford Sound avalanche squad to see how they keep the road to the famed Milford Sound clear during the winter months, before ending his trip on an isolated rocky beach, where the next stop is the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic.
