Master and Commander: The True Story Fans of Patrick O’Brian's novels stand by for a fine documentary deconstructing the 2003 film based on his stories of naval warfare, Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World. There, Russell Crowe starred as O’Brian's hero Captain Aubrey, and defeated a French super-frigate. As director Peter Weir explains, the story has been switched from Britain’s War of 1812 with the US and the technologically advanced vessel was the USS Constitution. An examination of the historical accuracy of the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The programme explores naval warfare in the 19th century and the construction secrets of the USS Constitution, which the movie's Acheron ship was a based on. A descendant of Admiral Thomas Cochrane reveals the similarities between the screen exploits of Russell Crowe and the real-life Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World premiered in 2003 and received 10 nominations for Academy Awards, including best picture.
