[edit] Information

An unvarnished documentary about the real Cidade de Deus (City of God). Policemen, drug dealers, and local inhabitants recount stories of everyday life on the frontlines of the notoriously violent favela. Co-director Lund later worked with Fernando Meirelles on City of God. Paulo Lins, one of the subjects in the documentary, wrote the novel on which City of God is based.

The documentary tells a similar story to City of God through interviews with police officers, drug-traffickers, and inhabitants of the slum. These dangerous neighborhoods are run by traffickers because police are reluctant to go in, which makes the residents not trust the police, which encourages armed vigilantism, which make the police even less likely to enter. When they do go in, they’re ready. One policeman interviewed asserts that they’re the best-trained, best-practiced urban combat unit on the planet.
