[edit] Information

Capturing the high drama of the Serengeti's distinctive wildlife up close.

[edit] Refuge

The dramatised natural history show returns, with the action centred on a beautiful lake, populated by flamingos and surrounded by green plains and rocky outcrops. Many families of animals have made their homes here, but when a great fire is seen building on the horizon, they face a difficult choice - stay and seek shelter, or risk fleeing across the tinder-dry plains. Narrated by Adjoa Andoh.

[edit] Inferno

In the aftermath of the great fire, the animals struggle to survive in an unrecognisable and inhospitable land. Bakari the baboon discovers his rival has perished in the blaze - but this does little to calm the tensions among the troop. Kali the lioness found refuge in a cave, but now she and her cubs are trapped there while her sister gives birth. They are separated from the pride with nothing to eat and no one to defend them.

[edit] Kinship

As the land recovers the action now centres on the river, where the bonds of kinship are tested to their limits. Kali the lioness is separated from her cubs in a spectacular hunt and the baby lions find themselves trapped in a bend in a river, with hooves thundering all around them. Chubby baby hippo Mafuta learns to survive in his riverine home, although just staying afloat is a challenge for this newborn - and Magamba the crocodile also has him in her sights.

[edit] Dominion

Bakari and the rest of the baboons can see no escape when the lions take over their home - until the pride fall asleep. Baby hippo Mafuta's mother tries to keep the crocodiles from desecrating his dead father's body - but in the ensuing chaos the youngster is swept away down the river. Crocodile Magamba defends her hatchlings and Duma the cheetah struggles to make friends.

[edit] Pressure

Baby hippo Mafuta is in crisis. His pod has been taken over by a marauding male and his mother must take him far away from the river. Kali the lioness tries to dig the warthogs out of the den, but there's an unexpected twist when the rest of the pride gets involved. As the land dries, the lake becomes a place of refuge for the thirsty herds - but as things go from bad to worse, Bakari leads the baboons in search of better foraging, while Nalla and the elephants set off in search of water.

[edit] Restoration

As the drought ends and the land returns to its former beauty, newborn giraffe Twiga takes his tentative first steps, trying to control his gangly legs - and he must learn quickly as lioness Kali is on the prowl. Another baby enters the elephant herd, and shortly after the newborn's father appears to greet his son in an awe-inspiring moment. Mafuta and the rest of the hippos return to the river, only to find the crocodiles have laid claim to the riverbank - so the hippos try to evict their old enemies.
