[edit] Information

In 2004, the carcass of a baby mammoth was accidentally discovered by Yakutian gold miners. This June, Discovery Channel travels to a remote destination in central Siberia to tell the story of the baby mammoth, finding out more about this “survivor” from the Pleistocene.

What happened to it during its life? How did it live? What took place at the moment of its death? And, whether it would be possible to clone a mammoth to resurrect a species from extinction.

This one-off special follows an international team of paleodetectives as they attempt to unravel the mysteries of the baby mammoth: from an “ice cave” laboratory in Yakutsk where the remains are housed, to a high-tech facility in Tokyo that performs some of the most sophisticated 3-D imaging of ancient animals.

Using the data gleaned from forensic studies of the baby mammoth both in the field and the laboratory, along with the growing body of physical evidence such as fossils, tusks, and hair from Siberian mammoth hunts past and present, Baby Mammoth will unfold the story of this iconic animal's life and death. The evidence will also provide insight into what may have caused the extinctions at the end of the Ice Age.
