[edit] Information

Australia's Greatest Maritime Mystery FInally Solved. The wreckage of HMAS Sydney, sunk off the West Australian coast in 1941, has at last been found. The Sydney’s entire crew of 645 went down with the ship in the Indian Ocean and its location has been a mystery for 66 years. The Hunt for HMAS Sydney tells the incredible story of a ship lost in the middle of nowhere and that of the dedicated search team who always had a strong belief they would find it.

The sinking of the HMAS Sydney has enormous historical and cultural significance in Australia and its discovery provides closure to thousands of people whose relatives perished. At the same time, this is a fascinating detective story (clues to the fate of the ship were left in code by the captain of the Kormoran), a gripping needle-in-a-haystack quest and a fascinating historical drama.

Much of the footage comes from onboard the Geosounder, as shipwreck hunter David Mearns and his team scan the sonar results for wreckage. But there's also plenty of historical footage, interviews with relatives of the sailors, a computer-generated re-enactment of the fatal battle and, of course, that spooky underwater footage.

All up, it's a tight, compelling package that lays to rest the conspiracy theories and provides satisfying answers to questions that have intrigued Australians for more than 66 years.
