[edit] Information

The Minster TV viewers get the chance to see behind-the-scenes of one of Britain’s great historic buildings - York Minster. A small team from the BBC filmed at York Minster for most of 2013 - capturing the unsung heroes whose work ensures the largest medieval Gothic cathedral north of the Alps is kept open and vibrant for all to enjoy. The documentary goes right to the heart of York Minster during a year when it is in the middle of a huge restoration project and follows the people that make it tick - from the specialist stonemasons and glaziers to the choristers and choirmasters of the York Minster Choir as well as the vergers and the officers of the Minster’s own police force. The series will help people realise the massive amount of work - and love - that goes on behind the scenes to keep such a wonderful building alive for the whole country, if not the world, to enjoy. This has been a great opportunity for the BBC to capture not only these major milestones but all the work and activity by staff and volunteers which happens on a daily basis and makes York Minster such a special place for the thousands of people who attend a service or experience the glory of the spaces of this huge church.

[edit] New Beginnings

It's the run-up to Easter and everyone is busy. Verger Alex Carberry has to overcome a fear of heights to drape a cloth over a giant crucifix, the minster police react to an emergency call, and the stonemasons prepare for one of their most important jobs for hundreds of years - carving a new version of the mysterious weathered figure at the pinnacle of the east window.

[edit] Renovations

The stone carvers are hard at work at York Minster as the building goes through a £20 million restoration programme. But they're up against it - have they got enough time to replace the mysterious weathered statue that sits above the east window? Meanwhile, back inside the Minster, the girl choristers are getting ready for their first major performance on their own.

[edit] Celebrations

Graffiti artists are allowed to spray paint inside York Minster with the full blessing of the clergy. And as Christmas comes to York Minster, head verger Alex Carberry dresses up as Santa and gets to play a trick on children from The Minster's pre-school.
