Officially founded in 1696, but stemming from a tradition of water-borne warfare going back to the 7th century, Russia’s navy has one of the most storied and interesting records of any of the world’s great armed forces. In this comprehensive documentary, THE HISTORY CHANNELî provides rare understanding of the origins, growth and capabilities of THE RUSSIAN NAVY.
Beginning with Tsar Peter the Great’s inspiration to form the modern Imperial Russian Navy from whole-sailcloth in the late 17th century, THE RUSSIAN NAVY follows its growing traditions through victories over the Swedes in 1721 and over the Turks in 1788. It then examines the forceful and innovative leadership of Admiral Sergi Gorshko, who in the 1960's and 70's created a fearsome fleet that nearly tipped the balance of power during the Cold War.
THE RUSSIAN NAVY offers a unique view of this legendary military force: steeped in history, long shrouded by the Iron Curtain, now faded from its former glory, but always fascinating.
