[edit] Information

Whale Adventure with Nigel Marven Wildlife adventurer Nigel Marven is traveling 6000 miles, following grey whales as they undertake the longest mammal migration on Earth, up the Pacific coast of North America. From the warm winter birthing lagoons of Baja California, Mexico, a grey whale mother and her newborn calf must travel northwards to the icy seas of the Alaskan Arctic. It’s a long, dangerous journey, past some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. On land, he finds snakes, bears, eagles and antelope, while out on the ocean waves he comes across a supporting cast of boisterous dolphins, playful sea lions, huge humpbacks and deadly killer whales.

[edit] An Incredible Journey Begins

Wildlife film-maker Nigel Marven follows grey whales as they undertake the longest mammal migration on Earth, more than 5,000miles along the Pacific coast of North America from Mexico to Alaska. In Baja California's San Ignacio lagoon, Nigel observes the calves as they spend their first months of life suckling and learning swimming skills, and talks to the scientists studying them. As the whales start their journey north towards the American border, Nigel takes a road trip through the desert, encountering rattlesnakes, lizards and antelope along the way.

[edit] North to the Golden Gate

The grey whales' migratory journey takes Nigel up the coast of California, where the hustle and bustle of human activity is a stark contrast to the peace of the Mexican desert he has just left behind. He encounters humpbacks in the Santa Barbara Channel, is led on a merry dance by a diminutive fox on the island of Santa Cruz, spots condors above Big Sur, and crosses the Golden Gate Bridge to end his adventure in Redwood National Park.

[edit] Swimming with Giants

As the whales swim further into the cold seas of the Pacific Northwest, the presenter heads to Washington state to join the Quileute tribe for its annual whale-welcoming ceremony. Heading across the Canadian border, Nigel follows the whales to Vancouver Island, where he witnesses the drama of a frenzied attack by killer whales. Arriving at Ucluelet, he explores the area's picturesque bays and inlets and meets up with the whales as they feed on herring eggs.

[edit] Journeys End

The presenter travels to the Bering Sea in the hope of witnessing the whales complete the final stretch of their journey, before moving on to observe puffins, cormorants, Arctic foxes and fur seals on the Pribilof Islands off Alaska's west coast. He is then taken on a midnight boat ride around St Lawrence Island, and concludes his adventure in Barrow - the most northerly city in America - where locals celebrate a successful hunting season with a blanket-toss event.
