The Foreign Legion - Tougher Than The Rest Men from all over the world have left their pasts behind to start a new life as elite soldiers in the French Foreign Legion. Director/Producer Elisabeth Nord has been granted unprecedented access to follow this legendary defence force from the inside. The Foreign Legion Tougher than the Rest looks beyond the myths and brutal reputation of the French Foreign Legion, portraying the legionnaires and their lives within the Legion. This exploration reveals the true face of one of the most famous, mysterious and secretive fighting forces in the world. Step into the secretive world of the French Foreign Legion. Venture into the secretive world of the French Foreign Legion and discover what it takes to become a soldier in one of the world’s toughest and most famous fighting forces. This three-part series meets the legionnaires – made up of men from many countries – and follows them from France to Africa as they battle through gruelling training regimes, undertake tricky peacekeeping missions and make preparations for the annual Camerone Day, a celebration of the Legion’s most heroic battle.

In the first episode we meet of the legionnaires of the 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment in Nimes. We get a closer look at them training, in the regiment parading and what life is like in the barracks. We meet legionnaires and hear their view on being in the Legion and also hear about their backgrounds. Through narration and footage (including archive) of the Legion in action, find out what the Legion and legionnaires do and what type of people they are. We see the legionnaires in France, in Ivory Coast on a peacekeeping mission and in Djibouti where the Legion has its toughest combat training centre.

The second episode follows one of the strongest Legion traditions when the companies of the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment in Nimes compete in the annual competition of building the best Christmas crib. We follow Adjudant Raubenheimer from England who is building the crib for the 3rd Company. The General of the Legion - General Pichot de Champfleury - is paying a visit to the regiment in Nimes to see the progress of the Christmas crib building. In Djibouti, Africa, the snipers are training, legionnaires are up for the final exercise of their combat training, and a hindrance track must be passed both during the day and during the night.

In the final show of the series, the 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment is on an exercise in the city of Rodez and the parachute regiment is training in Djibouti. The General is visiting his regiment in Nimes in the build up to the annual celebration of Camerone Day which includes the Camerone Games. Camerone Day is celebrated in remembrance of the most heroic battle in the Legion's history.
